Brainy Breakfast

I’ve been talking up our morning shakes around here.  Our family calls it a Brainy Breakfast, and we have been drinking this almost daily for the last several years.  We noticed from early on that when we begin our day with it, we just feel “better”.   And when we go without, for whatever reason, we sorta feel “off”.  I can’t explain it but anyone who has incorporated this shake into their diet can attest to the same.

This is the recipe I’ve been recommending ever since I started with Juice Plus+.  It is adapted from Dr. Pam Popper’s Healthy Breakfast Shake.

8 ounces of plant milk (soy or rice)
1 scoop of Juice Plus+® Complete
1 tablespoon brewer’s yeast
1 tablespoon organic golden flax seeds, freshly ground
1/3 cup raw food-grade green tea leaves
1 ½ cups frozen strawberries
4-6 ounces of filtered water
Combine in a blender and blend until smooth. Serves 1.

It makes for a big shake, but let me tell you, you will drink every. single. drop!

Dr. William Sears, America’s foremost pediatrician, also has 2 versions of this shake on his website here.  I hope you’ll take the time to read what he has to say about it, but for your convenience…

School-Ade: A Breakfast On The Run Smoothie

  • 3 cups milk or soy beverage
  • 11/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1-2 servings Juice Plus+® Complete or similar multinutrient supplement
  • one banana
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup each of your favorite fruit, frozen (e.g., organic strawberries, papaya, mango)
  • 2 tbsp. flax oil or 1/2 cup flaxseed meal
  • 4 ounces tofu
  • 2 tbsp. peanut butter (optional)
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 avocado

Combine all the ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately after blending while the mixture still has a bubbly milkshake-like consistency.

School-Ade Quick

  • 2 cups of milk or soy or rice beverage, or 1 cup milk and 1 cup yogurt
  • 1 serving Juice Plus+® Complete
  • 2 tsp. flax oil
  • 1 small frozen banana, cut up
  • 1/2 cup each of your favorite fruit, frozen (e.g., blueberries strawberries, papaya)
  • 2 ice cubes if fruit is not frozen or if you want a lighter taste

Makes one 20-ounce serving. (approximately 550 calories).

Drinking our Brainy Breakfast on a daily basis is one of the easiest ways that we are making our goal for optimal Nutrition come to Fruition… Not only is it simple and quick, but we are setting ourselves up for success by ensuring that we begin each day with a powerful nutritional punch!

What about you?  Have you made smoothies or shakes a part of your daily routine?

Love the JP shake… Wouldnt do without it and have used it for 11 years! Have not “tired” of it.

Love the Popper recipe too… I use it all as a way to get more concentrated nutrition into my family’s bodies everyday.

My latest FAV: Pina Colada juice by Dole, 1 scoop Vanilla Complete, 1 TBS ground flaxseed and some frozen strawberries. Everyone loves it.

Sharon, I agree with you on both counts – it never gets boring and the nutritional density is outstanding! However, I would want to add some coconut to that to make it really taste like a Pina Colada! Delish!

I go in spurts with making smoothies in the morning. I need to splurge and treat myself to a better blender.

Get a BULLET. I do everything in mine! I actually have two now. One we had from when we got married, and the new one I got with Isagenix. So I have TWO and I use it every day to do my shakes. I also use it to do a lot of the chopping of onions, garlic, or grinding of fresh spices, or nuts.
LOVE IT. Totally awesome tool. It never gets put away in our house. On my counter top for easy use and access, along with my Kitchen Aid mixer.
I don’t like to cook, nor am I very good at it, but that BULLET is DA BEST!

Staci, we have a bullet set too but for us, its not that great. We have such a large family that it takes us forever with those single serves! And I find it to be obnoxiously loud, with a weak motor. lol! But, it is great for the kids because it is small and lightweight enough that even Brixton can use it on his own.

You really do. We’ve gone through several blenders too and could have purchased a couple of Vita Mix machines with the money we wasted. BUT, Sharon told me that when I get to NMD, she is getting me a Vita Mix. Right, Sharon?! lol! ;0

I wrote about our green smoothie on my blog not too long ago. Even my 18 month old daughter loves them. A sneaky little way of adding extra goodness to her diet. Jade x

Jade, we went through a period of green smoothies but I must admit, they never really tasted “good”. I would say we “tolerated” them because we needed to get all of that nutrition into the kids, as per our homeopath. I would love to know your recipe. Would you mind sharing the link here? Thanks!
